There are several home and work energy conservation techniques available, ranging from simple daily habits to large investments that not only assist the environment but also lower your energy expenses. So, what are some easy ways to cut energy use at home? Making our daily routines more energy efficient does not have to include drastic steps like living by candlelight or wearing five jumpers to bed! Making easy, tiny modifications to your everyday routine can help you become more energy efficient.
Make changes to your daily habits
You don’t have to go out and buy energy-efficient products to lower energy use in your home and increase your energy savings. Turning off lights or appliances while not in use is a simple way to conserve energy. You can also save energy by conducting household duties manually, such as hanging your clothing to dry instead of putting them in the dryer or washing dishes by hand.
Turning down the heat on your thermostat in the winter and using your air conditioner less in the summer have the greatest potential for utility savings. Heating and cooling expenditures account for about half of the average home’s utility bills, therefore reducing the intensity and frequency of heating and cooling provides the greatest savings.
Change your lights
Traditional incandescent light bulbs use a lot of energy and need to be replaced more frequently than energy-efficient alternatives. Halogen incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), and light-emitting diode bulbs (LEDs) use 25-80% less electricity and last 3 to 25 times longer than standard bulbs. Although energy-efficient bulbs are more expensive when purchased, their efficient energy use and longer lifespan mean that they are less expensive in the long term. If you have light fixtures you can get a fixed price electrician to install LED lights for you.
Purchase energy-saving appliances
Appliances account for around 13% of total residential energy use. When shopping for a new appliance, keep two numbers in mind: the initial purchase price and the annual operating cost. Although energy-efficient appliances may cost more up front, their operational costs are typically 9-25% cheaper than conventional versions.
Reduce your water heating costs
Water heating accounts for a significant portion of your total energy consumption. Aside from acquiring an energy efficient water heater, there are three ways to reduce your water heating expenses: simply use less hot water, lower your water heater’s thermostat, or insulate your water heater and the first six feet of hot and cold water pipes.
Make your home more energy-efficient
Weatherizing, or closing air leaks around your home, is an excellent way to save money on heating and cooling. Vents, windows, and doors are the most typical sources of air leaks into your home. To avoid these leaks, make sure there are no gaps or openings between the wall and the vent, window, or doorframe.
Caulk can be used to seal air leaks between stationary objects such as the wall and window frame. Weather stripping can be used to seal cracks between moving objects such as movable windows and doors.
